Adrift: Page 1

Page 1 has been completed to mixed reviews by me.

I don't have Magic Cloth for this, so I'm doing it on Lugana, which means I have to grid it, to keep my sanity intact.  When I work in grids, I usually do a column at a time.  But for some reason, this time I was three columns in before I realized that I could see the line where the columns had been.

This does not please my little OCD heart.  From the fourth column on, I would do a stitch every second line when it came to the end of the column, and that seemed to even out my columns and blend them in a lot smoother.

But I still have three columns.

Has anyone encountered this particular problem?  I'm hoping that as I work on the rest of these, that some miracle will happen and the lines won't seem so blatant to me by the time I am finished.  But I'm fearing that I will have to redo these three columns.  This thought fills me with dread.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, or make it look less columnish, I'm very interested to hear what you have to say.

This is my 3rd Heaven and Earth and the first time I've encountered this particular problem.

I shall persevere and start page 2.  But I know me, and those three little columns are going to bug me.

  1. Well I left a comment and hit publish and it disappeared LOL. Anyways I stitch in columns and have never noticed that. Also if there are big areas of a color then I will stitch that and then fill in with the confetti stitches. I think when you wash the piece then the columns disappear.

    1. Do you know what I have a habit of doing? Writing a comment, then hitting "Logout" instead of post. The number of times I have done this is embarrassing!

I'm hoping you are right about the lines coming out after washing. I'm really, really hoping!

  2. I agree; I think that when you wash it those columns will blend away. To be honest, I didn't even notice them until you mentioned it! But, I totally understand that "it may not bug you but it bugs me" feeling.

    1. Really? You didn't notice? This gives me hope that I am merely being neurotic and silly.

I've never hoped to be proven neurotic and silly more in my life than now.

  3. The very first HAED I did, I did by page and there was such a definite vertical line, I actually started over because I couldn't stand it! But, after a bit more trial and error, I discovered that horizontal lines don't appear, so I started doing rows at a time versus columns and it worked out better. It's one of the reasons why I'm scared to park...the thought of doing grid by grid and all those tiny little vertical lines would drive me insane! Let us know how you get on.

    1. Funny how horizontal lines don't appear, hey?
I'm finding parking ok, now that I've started stitching over to the next line. I find that helps immensely!

  4. I haven't done a HAED yet so I can't offer any advice but read this post with interest. I see what you mean about the 3 vertical lines. I think they would probably come out with washing. Interesting that they don't appear if you work horizontally!

    1. I know, Justine. It doesn't make sense how they will show vertically, yet not horizontally.

Must be just how the eye sees it, I suppose.

  5. I've heard of that happening before, but it hasn't happened to me --- yet. I was told that when you get near the dividing line/column, do a few stitches in the next section to help them blend in. I hope this makes sense. I am working on a solid piece of stitching, but not having any problems and this is how I'm doing it.

    1. Hi Terri,
That is exactly what I started doing and boy, what a difference it makes! The lines blend in nicely to each other now....which makes those lines stand out all the more. GRRR.

I'm hoping they will come out in the wash.

  6. Hi there, lovely progress! Im doing a HAED at the moment as well. I haven't encountered this problem yet but I'm thinking that maybe after you wash the piece the 'columns' will not be so obvious. Just a thought :)

  7. Thanks Lauren. I've heard that washing it and allowing it to relax may be all it takes. A friend also advised sewing the threads on the back together where the pages separate. It just forces the threads together.

This is my 3rd HaED and the first time I've encountered this particular problem.
